3 Common Methods of Cutting Concrete

When you are undergoing a major construction or renovation project, you will likely need to cut through concrete at some point. For example, you may need to cut through concrete walls to make space for new windows or cut through floors to install pipes. Either way, this isn’t a job you want to tackle on your own.

Concrete cutting involves the use of specialized tools that can be dangerous if you lack the expertise to operate them correctly. In addition, not all concrete cutting projects employ the same technique. Contractors use several different methods to cut concrete, and the right method for the job depends on factors like the thickness of the concrete and the size of the job.

 1. Slab Sawing

Also known as flat sawing, slab sawing is a technique used to cut flat surfaces like floors, driveways, and decks. Slab saws come in different types, ranging from small walk-behind push saws to heavy-duty, riding saws. These saws come in gas, diesel, propane, electric, and hydraulic versions. Some saws are capable of cutting through concrete that is up to 30 inches thick.

A key feature of slab saws is the diamond blade. The advantage to using a diamond blade to cut concrete is that it cuts more quickly and quietly than other blade materials and also requires less water. Diamond saws are also known for producing very precise cuts.

 2. Wall Sawing

As the name implies, wall sawing is a method for cutting through walls. Contractors sometimes use this method for cutting floors instead of slab sawing. For example, if you have a floor that is steeply sloped, a flat saw won’t work for the job, but a wall saw will. Wall sawing is also used to make openings in ceilings.

Like with slab saws, wall saws also usually feature a diamond blade. The advantage to wall saws is that some models can cut through concrete that is up to 21 inches thick.

If your project requires wall sawing, your concrete contractor will choose from an electric saw or a track-mounted hydraulic saw. Electric wall saws are lighter, quieter, and easier to use, but hydraulic saws are more powerful.

 3. Wire Sawing

When slab sawing or wall sawing aren’t an option, sometimes concrete contractors will use wire sawing. This technique is typically reserved for large-scale projects or for areas that are hard to access with other tools.

Wire saws feature a metal wire that is covered in diamond-tipped beads. This type of saw can easily cut through steel-encased concrete, reinforced rebar, and retaining walls. Because this method produces nearly no vibrations, it is useful for making precise cuts in concrete. A wire saw is especially useful for cutting irregular shapes into concrete with impressive accuracy.
